A 30-year-old man from Makeni Villa in Lusaka has been detained at Choma Central Police after allegedly impersonating a senior Zambia Army officer and defrauding individuals by promising them military jobs.
The suspect, identified as Isaac Twafuwa, was apprehended on Monday, April 22nd, by Warrant Officer Class One Nyambe Nyambe of the Zambia Army based in Choma.
According to Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, Twafuwa posed as a Brigadier General and shared digitally altered photos of himself in military uniform in a WhatsApp group, where he offered fake recruitment opportunities in exchange for cash.
The fraudulent scheme is believed to have been carried out between March and April 21st in both Lusaka and Choma. Acting on a tip-off, army personnel tracked down and arrested Twafuwa.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the crime and claimed the doctored profile photo was created by a known associate in Lusaka. A search of his residence in Choma led to the recovery of military items, smartphones, and a Toyota Honda (Reg: ALF 5520), which has since been impounded.
Authorities have secured all recovered items as exhibits as investigations continue.
