The Principal Resident Magistrate Court in Mzuzu has convicted and sentenced Amidu Phiri 28, to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour for having sexual intercourse with a female child.

The court heard through State

Prosecutor Sub Inspector Evance Billiant that on January 7, 2024, the victim’s mother, a mandasi seller at Mzuzu Car Park, sent her 13-year-old daughter to sell mandasi.

The girl returned home the following day and explained that she sold three mandasi to Phiri, who told her to come back around 18:00hrs to collect the money.

When she went back Phiri took her to Zigwagwa, then to his house in Zolozolo, where he forced himself on her multiple times throughout the night, without using protection. He was with five of his friends during the incident.

The matter was reported to Mzuzu Police Station, and the suspect was arrested on January 9, 2024.

The girl was referred to the hospital, where medical results confirmed penetration.

In court, the suspect pleaded guilty. He asked for leniency, saying he has a family to care for.

However, the State called for a stiff punishment, saying the victim was a minor and that the suspect planned the crime.

Principal Resident Magistrate

Clemence Chamwenda agreed with the State, saying the offence was serious and that the convict must be isolated from society. He then sentenced him to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour.

Phiri comes from Mwandila Village, Traditional Authority Mthwalo in Mzimba District.
