Malawian actor Tumpe Mtaya, popularly known as “Phwedo,” will spend another night in police custody as investigations continue into allegations he defiled a 15-year-old girl.
Central West Region Police spokesperson Foster Benjamin confirmed Mtaya will appear in court tomorrow to face formal charges, pending receipt of medical reports from the hospital.
The actor, famous for his role in “School Days,” was arrested yesterday. This isn’t his first legal trouble, Phwedo faced similar allegations last year.
Meanwhile, 4Kaya Filmz producer Kendall Kamwendo told local media that while Mtaya has roles in upcoming projects including “Welcome to Maula Prison,” the production company will respect the legal process.
“We let the law take its course,” Kamwendo said, adding that film production continues as scheduled.
Police say their investigation remains ongoing. The minor’s family has reportedly cooperated with authorities.
