A total of 23 people lost their lives in 21 fatal road traffic accidents recorded during this year’s Easter Holiday period, according to the Zambia Police Service.

Assistant Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi reported that 326 road traffic accidents occurred nationwide over the holiday period. Of these, 43 were classified as serious, resulting in 81 people sustaining serious injuries, while 61 were slight accidents, injuring 92 people. The remaining 201 incidents involved property damage only.

Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of accidents at 109, followed by the Copperbelt with 97, Central Province with 49, and Southern Province with 33. Eastern Province recorded 17, North-Western 12, Northern 8, Muchinga 7, and both Western and Luapula Provinces recorded 6 accidents each.

Chilabi also revealed that police recorded a total of 2,044 road traffic offences, which brought in K840,420 in admission of guilt fines.

In comparison to the 2024 Easter Holiday, this year saw a decrease of 12 road accidents and a drop in fatalities, down from 32 deaths last year to 23 in 2025.

Authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to reduce road carnage.
