A 36-year-old man from Phalombe has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for defiling a 15-year-old girl with a brain disability.
The Nkhata Bay Senior Resident Magistrate Court heard that the convict lived near the victim’s home. State prosecutor Andrew Singini told the court the crime happened in January this year when the man took advantage of the girl after her family left their home.
“The accused exploited the victim’s mental disability for his own pleasure instead of protecting her,” Singini argued, asking for a strong punishment.
Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda agreed with the prosecution, handing down the 18-year sentence as a warning to others who might prey on vulnerable children.
