A 42-year-old man, Emmanuel Matumba, has been slapped with a K5 million fine by the Nkhotakota Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle 99 drums of fuel into neighbouring Mozambique.

Matumba faced multiple charges, including failure to comply with a lawful directive, exportation of liquid fuels without a license, and operating fuel transportation and supply services without proper authorization.

In the same case, a second accused, Juwawo Mndala, aged 57, was convicted and ordered to pay a fine of K1 million.

Delivering the ruling, Presiding Magistrate Dumisani Katundu ordered the forfeiture of the 99 drums of fuel to the Malawi Government. The proceeds from the seized fuel will be handled by the Asset Forfeiture Unit under the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The case was prosecuted by Clement Ng’ambi, Legal Officer from the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), in collaboration with Central East Region Police Prosecutor Auleulerious Phukaphuka.
