Phwedo to Appear in Court for Child S3x Case Today

Popular actor Tumpe Mtaya, widely known as Phwedo, is today set to appear before the Lilongwe Magistrate Court today to face defilement charges.
Phwedo was arrested on Tuesday 22 April 2025, following allegations of engaging in sexual activity with a minor. The case was initially pending medical examination of the victim.
Central West Region Police spokesperson Foster Benjamin confirmed on Wednesday evening that Phwedo has now been formally charged under Section 138 of the Penal Code for having sexual intercourse with a child.
“Following the results of the medical examination, Phwedo has been charged accordingly and will be taken to court today, where he will take his plea,” Benjamin stated.
The case has sparked public interest given Phwedo celebrity status and their movie Welcome to Maula Prison which set to be premiered next month.
