Lilongwe Magistrate Court has reserved its ruling on popular actor Phwedo’s bail application until tomorrow at 2 PM after hearing arguments from both sides today.
During the heated session, State Prosecutor Saddrey Sambo strongly opposed bail, arguing the popular comedian could interfere with witnesses. “The accused is a public figure known to the victim, creating serious risk of witness tampering,” Sambo told the court, referencing bail guidelines. He requested five more days to complete investigations.
Defense lawyer Khwima Mchizi fired back, demanding his client’s immediate release. “My client deserves equal treatment before the law, not special restrictions because of his fame,” Mchizi argued. He dismissed prosecution claims about witness interference as unsubstantiated.
The 36-year-old actor, real name Tumpe Nigel Mtaya, appeared composed in the dock wearing a checked shirt as lawyers sparred over his fate. He faces defilement charges involving a 15-year-old girl.
Magistrate Ruth Chinangwa adjourned proceedings after three hours of arguments, telling a packed courtroom: “We shall reconvene tomorrow afternoon for the ruling.”
