The government of Tanzania has announced a ban on agricultural produce from Malawi  entering its territory, citing economic protection measures

This development comes just a day after Tanzania introduced new border restrictions, urging Malawi to lift its export bans on certain goods such as maize, flour and bananas, which are currently not allowed into Malawi.

According to Tanzania minister of agriculture, Hussein Bashe, the move is aimed at ensuring Tanzania’s own economic interests are not undermined. He emphasized that it is unfair for Tanzania to continue facing economic strain while neighboring countries like Malawi continue to benefit.

Minister Bashe made it clear that Tanzanian borders are now closed to agricultural products from Malawi. He further stated that even maize purchased by Malawi within Tanzania, which was intended for humanitarian relief, will no longer be allowed to exit the country.
