Commissioner Francis Kasaila Resigns from MEC

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the resignation of Commissioner Francis Kasaila . According to a public statement released by the Commission on April 24, 2025, signed by Sangwani Mwafuliwa, MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations and was released from the commission’s office in Lilongwe. Kasaila officially stepped down from his duties affective on April 23, 2025, citing personal reasons.

During his tenure he played a vital role, notably serving as the chairperson of the media, civil and voter education committee which is a critical component in ensuring transparency and public engagement in the electoral process.

According to the reports Kasaila resignation is following his victory in the primary elections for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Nsanje

The commission expressed deep appreciation for Kasaila’s dedicated services and valuable contributions during his working period.

In accordance with the section 49(8) of the Malawi  Electoral Commission Act, his resignation was submitted in writing to the president, adhering to legal requirements.

The commission is now  consists of five members plus the chairperson, a number that meets the legal quorum required for conducting official business.

The law mandates that not less than four commissioners must be present for the commission to proceed with its responsibilities.
