Malawian songstress Tunosiwe Mwakalinga, popularly known as Tuno, has opened up about the surprising resurface of her hit song No One, which she recorded seven years ago but is now gaining massive attention from Music lovers.
In an emotional reflection, Tuno revealed that she initially doubted the song’s success because it was in English, unlike the popular Ragga and Chichewa hits dominating Malawian airwaves at the time. “I remember the day I wrote and recorded this song I was so nervous because I was a huge fan of Sonye (the producer), and I didn’t think I was good enough to be in his presence,” she shared.
“Luckily, I wasn’t emotionally okay, so the lyrics just naturally came out.” Despite Sonye’s confidence that the song would “hit the waves,” Tuno remained doubtful.
“I told him Malawians prefer Ragga and Chichewa songs there’s no Chichewa in this one. And I was right… at first,” she admitted.
When No One was released, it failed to make an immediate impact in Malawi but gained traction in South Africa, even ranking number 16 on Africa’s Top 100 Songs.
Years later, Malawians have rediscovered the track, embracing it as a timeless hit. “Now, after seven years, people are realizing that this song was made by their own,” Tuno said. Why Is the Song Trending Again? Listeners who are just discovering No One say it sounds fresher than many recent releases, praising its smooth vocals and production by Sonye. Social media is buzzing with comments like:
“This song is better than 90% of what’s dropping today!”
“How did we sleep on this gem for so long?”
“Tuno was ahead of her time!”
With its sudden revival, fans are now demanding a remix seven years after its original release. Will No One finally get the full recognition it deserves in Malawi? For now, Tuno is just grateful that her music is being appreciated even if it took years.
