Well-known actor Tumpe Mtaya, popularly called Phwedo, appeared in court today as he awaits a decision on his bail application. The actor faces serious charges of defiling a minor and child grooming.
Principal Resident Magistrate Benjamin Chulu will deliver the bail ruling. The hearing was moved to the Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court because the original courtroom was too small.
Phwedo’s lawyer, Robert Kadzakumanja, said they are ready for the case to proceed. The court is expected to give its decision on bail this afternoon at 2 o’clock.
The actor was arrested last week after reports emerged that he had sexually abused a child. If found guilty, he could face at least 14 years in prison under Malawi’s laws.
Many people are following this case closely because Phwedo is a famous actor. Child rights groups say no one should escape punishment for harming children, no matter how famous they are.
The court will soon decide whether Phwedo can get bail or must remain in custody while waiting for his trial.
