Government through the Minister of Mining has stated that the country has the potential to generate over 1.8 billion US dollars annually from its existing mines.
Speaking at this year’s Malawi Mining Investment Forum in Lilongwe, the Minister of mining Dr. Ken Zikhale Ng’oma informed the president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, that although Malawi is facing economic challenges, it is like a person dying of thirst while standing in water.
‘ There are already signs that the country is progressing toward an economy increasingly reliant on mining activities’ said Ng’oma.
Ng’oma added that currently, the mining sector contributes 1 Kwacha for every 100 Kwacha to the national economy, but he stated that this contribution is expected to rise to 30 Kwacha for every 100 Kwacha in the coming years.
In his remarks, the President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, expressed full confidence in the future of Malawi’s mining driven economy and emphasized that the country has all the necessary resources to lift itself out of poverty.
