The conclave that is held to elect a new leader of the Catholic Church worldwide (the Pope) will begin on May 7, according to an announcement by the Holy See Press Office.

The cardinals, who are responsible for electing the Pope and are currently in Rome, made this decision during their fifth meeting, which took place on Monday.

The conclave will be held in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, which will be closed to the public. From May 7 until the ceremony announcing the new Pope, no one except the cardinals will be allowed to enter.

This is happening following the death of Pope Francis who died on the 21st of April 2025, Pope was suffering from stroke and subsequent heart failure.
