The Mangochi first grade Magistrates court has ordered a Zimbabwean national to pay a five hundred thousand Kwacha fine or in default serve thirty six months imprisonment with hard labor for causing death by reckless driving.

The court heard that the convict Andrew Thomson committed the offence on 2nd September this year.

On the fateful day Thomson was driving a white Toyota Hilux twin cab registration the direction of Chiponde heading to Nselema.

And Upon arrival at Palinde village due to speeding he hit a young male pedestrian 8 year old Silaji Saidi who was crossing from right to left hand side of the road.

Following the impact, Silaji sustained severe head injuries and fractures on his left leg and died on the spot.


The driver escaped unhurt but his motor vehicle had its grill, bumper and offside head lamp damaged.

Appearing in court he pleaded guilty as charged. When passing judgment first grade Magistrate Ronald M’bwana concurred with the prosecutor and slapped him with a five hundred thousand Kwacha fine or in default spend thirty six months imprisonment with hard labor for driving carelessly.

The bereaved family will receive K150, 000 as compensation.

The convict has paid the fine.
