Member of Parliament for Blantyre City South Allan Ngumuya has come out of his cocoon to back former first lady Callista Mutharika for endorsing the vice President Saulos Chilima as Presidential candidate for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the forthcoming polls.
The development comes barely days after another DPP MP by the name of Bon Kalindo, popularly known as Winiko also endorsed Chilima.
Speaking in an interview with Times Television Ngumuya said having President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as Presidential Candidate for the ruling DPP will be a big mistake for the party in the 2019 polls.
“If President Mutharika insists that he should be the party’s torchbearer in 2019 polls, then the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) will have an easy ride,” said Ngumuya.
He then urged Mutharika to pave way for Chilima saying the party will respect him as a father.
Meanwhile DPP top officials led by Minister of Information and Communications Technology Nicholas Dausi insist that Mutharika will represent the party.
