Main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has distanced itself from acts of violence which it says some DPP cadets disguising themselves in MCP attire are planning to undertake with an aim of disrupting the peaceful demonstrations organized by the Civil Society Organizations today on Friday 27th April 2018.

Malawi Congress Party’s statement

In a statement released on 26th April 2018 which was signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary Hon Ezekiel Ching’oma and 1st Deputy Publicity Secretary Hon Rev Maurice Munthali, MCP says once those people are arrested, they will be advised to lie to the nation that they were sent by MCP officials which is not the fact on the ground.

“It is in view of the aforesaid sinister plans that the Malawi Congress Party would like to categorically distance itself from all acts of violence as that is not the spirit and belief of our President Dr Lazarus Chakwera and all members of the Malawi Congress Party,” says the statement.

MCP leader, Chekwera among people demonstrating

The statement added that today’s demonstrations are the symbol of democratic and constitutional way of expressing people’s grievances and loss of trust on those who lead them. MCP says its young people are matured and disciplined to involve themselves in acts of violence.

“Let the nation know that the Malawi Congress Party is and will not be party to any act of violence during the planned demos. This is because our young people and all members are not only disciplined, they are mature, patriotic and passionate enough to love & safeguard their country even as we look forward to realising a transformed Malawi comes May 2019.”

Meanwhile, many parts of the country have already started demonstrating and no acts of violence have so far been registered.
