Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Dowa North East Constituency Sam Kawale has filed a motion to a have budgetary allocation for state owned Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) under vote 275 reduced from MK1,879, 762, 499.00 to MK1.

This has been disclosed in a notice circulated to all Members of Parliament under Standing Order 74 seen by Faceofmalawi reporter.

The lawmaker has cited biasness and some propaganda programmes aired at MBC aimed at tarnishing the image of opposition political parties.

“The Member of Parliament for Dowa North East Constituency gives notice under Standing Order 73, as read with Standing Order 140 (4), to move an amendment motion to Vote 275, Subverted Organisations, and specifically Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) vote as follows:

“That Vote 275 be reduced by One billion, Eight Hundred and Seventy Nine Million, Seven Hundred and Sixty Two Thousand, Four Hundred and Ninety Nine Kwacha and be given One Kwacha, in respect of the allocation for the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation,” read in part the notice.

In 2007 and 2008, then Television Malawi (TVM) and Malawi Broadcasting Station (MBC) got K1 allocation each as the committee of parliament responsible for media kept a sharp eye on the public broadcasters following their tendency to work with ruling parties and not Malawians.

Members of Parliament (MPs) cited castigatory programs such as Makiyolobasi that was said to be mocking former President Bakili Muluzi.
