Malawi today drew with Nigeria 1-1 in the World Cup 2014 qualifiers at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre in a dramatic finish to the game as both goals came in the last minutes of the game.
In a match that was heading for a goalless draw Ruben Gabriel thought he had won it for Nigeria when he headed home the goal in the 89th minute, but Malawi’s John Banda equalised three minutes later in what was the last kick of the game.
Malawi had an upper hand in the opening 45 minutes, creating the better chances and Robin Ngalande hit the crossbar once.
Malawi later forced Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama to make a great save.
Malawi started the second half furiously almost scoring in the first minutes in the half and should have been awarded a penalty.
Despite all the attempts, Malawi failed to score but were rejuvenated after the Nigerian goal and were rewarded will a well taken goal from a free kick by John Banda.
Malawi now have 2 points in the group and Nigeria have 4 points. Malawi drew the first game in the qualifiers against Kenya while Nigeria beat Namibia 1-0.
The next World Cup qualifier games are in March next year, but Malawi has another game next week against Chad and Nigeria faces Rwanda in the African Cup.
Malawi has to win the game against Chad otherwise they will be out of the contention for a place in the finals for the 2013 Africa Cup to be held in South Africa.
