Former Vice President Khumbo Hastings Kachali has condemned the burning of two vehicles belonging to United Transformation Movement (UTM) in Mangochi on Saturday night.

Unknown thugs suspected of being from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) petrol bombed two vehicles of UTM on Saturday and Sunday vehicles respectively.

One of the vehicles petrol bombed belongs to Member of Parliament for Mzimba North Agness Nyalonge who recently dumped the opposition Peoples Party (PP) and joined UTM under Dr. Saulos Chilima.

Writing on his official facebook page, Kachali described the violence as uncalled for and urged the police to thoroughly investigate the matter.

“Fellow citizens, first, I would like to condemn the violence that was visited upon UTM members where their vehicles were burnt. This kind of behaviour is uncalled for. Malawi is a democracy and each citizen has the right to join any political grouping. I urge the police to thoroughly investigate this issue and bring to book all the culprits.

“Second, I would like to deplore irresponsible behaviour by some politicians who find promotion of violence as a suitable campaign tactic. Let me put it straight; it is simply not acceptable for the second citizen of this great nation to be brandishing a primitive and barbaric weapon of violence (the catapult) on a political podium and continuously, in a sadistic manner, be demonstrating how he will unleash brutality on his political opponents come May 22nd, 2019. That is childish!” wrote Kachali.

Meanwhile Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) has also condemned the attack.
