A 45 year old man, Watson Jere who works as Court Clerk at Chintheche Magistrate Court  in Nkhatabay district is in the hands of Police for allegedly swindling client’s money amounting to over K1.1 million.

Nkhatabay Police Spokesperson, Kondwani James confirmed the arrest Thursday at the Boma saying Jere was arrested on Monday for allegedly swindling the money which was in his custody.

He said Jere was entrusted by the court to be keeping money which the court raised through fines, compensations and bail bonds.

“It is alleged that the suspect squandered K1.1 million in the period between December 2017 and August 2018 and he was exposed after he failed to account for money which the court was supposed to give back to a client,” James disclosed.

He said when quizzed the suspect said he had rented out the money to people and the matter was reported to Chintheche Police who arrested the suspect on grounds of theft by public servant which is contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code.

Jere who is remanded at Nkhatabay prison is expected to appear before the court of law soon.

Jere hails from Peter Jere Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
