Police in Lilongwe on Saturday arrested Lyson Biziweck Banda for being found in possession of two pieces of raw ivory weighing 2.83 kilograms.
According to Lilongwe Police Station Spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, police received a tip from a well-wisher that the suspect was offering the pieces of ivory for sale at Chitedze Trading Centre.
“We followed the tip and rushed to the scene together with wildlife personnel. We managed to arrest him and recovered the items,” Dandaula said.
The suspect, who is a driver by profession, hails from Chabwera Village, T/A Mabuka in Mulanje District.
Meanwhile, Banda is expected to appear before court soon to answer to charges of being in illegal possession of specimen which is contrary to Section 86(1) and 90 of the Malawi National Parks and Wildlife Act .
