Former President Dr. Bakili Muluzi who is also founder of United Democratic Front (UDF) has expressed shock over the death of former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Mathews Chikaonda.

Chikaonda died in the wee hours of Tuesday in California Hospital in United States of America after a long illness.

One of the family members, Hyacinta confirmed of the development on Tuesday morning, saying funeral details will be communicated later.

Speaking in an interview with one of the local radios in Malawi Muluzi said the country has lost a man who contributed positively to the growth of the country’s economy.

“Chikaonda was an honest man who could correct me whenever I was going wrong. He was like and advice to me somehow,” said Muluzi.

Muluzi appointed Chikaonda as RBM governor in 1994 and in 2000 he was appointed as Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.
