Some opposition parties have called on Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Jane Ansah and Chief Elections Officer, Sam Alfandika and other senior MEC officials to step aside in order to allow for an independent forensic audit into all electoral equipment under the commission’s care.
The parties say they are seeking technical and material support from UN through the UNDP Malawi Office, the EU and DFID for the independent forensic audit to be carried out by Malawians led by a retired Supreme Court Judge.
The political parties led by former Vice President, Cassim Chilumpha held a press briefing at Malawi Sun Hotel in the Commercial Capital Blantyre.
In his speech Chilumpha said next year’s elections will be a sham if the issue of the missing registration kit is not addressed.
He said Mec dismally failed to address the issue at the Necof meeting last week.
The briefing also saw the presence from Republican Party, Assembly for Democracy and Development (ADD), Malawi Forum for Unity and Development (MAFUNDE), UTM, People’s Progressive Movement (PPM), and People’s Party (PP).
