Police in the central region on Saturday arrested four men who were seen dancing on banknotes during a wedding ceremony in Lilongwe, area 47.

Assistant Public Relations Officer at Central Region Police Headquarters, Constable Patrick Kasauka has identified the four as  aged 30 years, from Kalembo village T/A Kalembo, district Balaka, Lumbani Nyasulu aged 36 from Uliba village T/A Wansambo in Karonga district, Dastain Maluwaya aged 63 years and Makalani Elisa, aged 25, both from Tandwe village T/A Malenga in Ntchisi district.

“The suspects were attending a wedding ceremony at Maziko Garden within Area 47 where they were seen dancing and stepping on banknotes, and damagde the notes in the process.

“The police who were strategically present at the place arrested the four instantly, and charged them in line with Section 23(2) (c) of the Reserve Bank Act which prohibits any person from willfully defacing, soiling or damaging bank currency,”explained Constable Patrick Kasauka.

This comes amid several calls from Reserve Bank warning people to avoid the tendency of stepping on banknotes during weddings, bridal showers and all other celebrations.

Currently the Reserve Bank of Malawi is rolling out the campaign to arrest any person found violating this law.

Meanwhile, the suspects are on police bail, and they will be taken to court once the preparations are completed.

The Police are therefore warning all people to exercise decency when offering money at any event to avoid being the victim of this law.
