The embattled Malusi Gigaba has resigned as the Minister of Home Affairs, following rumours that he would be fired later this week.

The resignation was confirmed in a statement by the Presidency on Tuesday.

Gigaba had served in Cabinet structures since 2004, when he was first appointed as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

He has since served as the Minister of Public Enterprises, Finance and Home Affairs. However, his tenure in the South African Executive has been riddled with scandal – both professional and personal.

The Presidency said Gigaba had cited the interests of South Africa and ANC movement as reasons for his resignation. The resignation is also an attempt to relieve President Cyril Ramaphosa of undue pressure in what is already a difficult period to govern.

Minister of Transport Blade Nzimande will take care of the department until a permanent appointment is made.
