A body of a 38-year-old fisherman has been found on lake Malawi five days after the man went missing while fishing on the lake.

Lilkoma police public relations officer, Mcliff Ngulube said Likoma Police Station received a report on December, 01 from James Chiwiya of Mnyanje Village, Traditional Authority Mkumpha that Afetti Nyirenda went missing while fishing 01 December.

Following that, police officers and villagers tried to search for him but to no avail.

“A canoe which he was using was found on Wednesday December 05, with a knife, two bottles of beer and some fish in it. His body was found on December 06 in a decomposing state. It is believed that he was fishing while drinking beer,” said Ngulube.

A Postmortem indicated that the death was due to suffocation.

Meanwhile, Police are advising fishermen that they should refrain from drinking beer while fishing or not to go for fishing while drunk .

The deceased hailed from Wilson Village, T/A Malengamzoma in Nkhata Bay.
