Police in Chikwawa on Wednesday arrested Emmanuel Bito for allegedly duping job seekers of K600,000 after posing as a Clinton Foundation official.
Bito, 26, swindled 35 desperate job seekers from Traditional Authorities Mulilima and Katunga in the district.
“The suspect, between September and December this year, used to go around the villages announcing his recruitment move targeting jobless youths. He claimed that they would be working as part-time surveyors for the American organisation.” Constable Foster Benjamin narrated.
“Bito, however, demanded money ranging from K10,000 to K15,000 claiming it was meant for ‘water’ for his purported superior. He went ahead informing his victims that they would be going for an orientation in Mangochi on Thursday.” He added.
Some well-wishers tipped off the police about the suspect’s tricks. Police busted on Bito in one of the rest-houses at Dyeratu Trading Centre.
He was found with forms and fake coupons which he was apparently selling to farmers. Police seized the suspect and charged him with theft by trick.
Investigations are underway to recover the money.
Bito comes from Chapasuka Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mulilima in Chikwawa District.
