A Tunisian man was killed on Thursday by Algerian forces while fishing in their country’s waters.

The incident took place off the coast of Tabarka, a town in north-east Tunisia close to the border with Algeria, at around 10:30 (0930 GMT).

“A Tunisian fisherman was killed by shots from Algerian security while he was fishing in the territorial waters of Algeria,” said national guard spokesperson Houssameddine al-Jabali.

Initial reports said the 33-year-old was on board a boat with two others.

“They received a warning from Algerian security, before the gunshots,” Jabali added.

The fisherman was brought to shore in Tunisia and died en route to hospital.
