Chiradzulu First Grade Magistrate Court Friday sentenced a 25-year-old man for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.
Chiradzulu Police Station Detective Inspector Denis Mutara said that the girl was sexually assaulted on her way from school.
He said the victim’s mother reported the incident to Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) Police Unit on January 29 that Thomas Nagwiya dragged the girl into a maize field, raped and gave her K600.
“Passersby heard her crying and when she narrated her story, people started searching for Nagwiya.
“They found him at PIM market where he was selling clothes and handed him to police,” Mutara said.
He added that the girl was taken to PIM Clinic where medical examination results showed that the girl was defiled.
Mutara further said when Nagwiya appeared in court, he was found guilty and Magistrate Lameck Kwapatila sentenced him to 12 years imprisonment to deter would-be offenders.
Nagwiya hails from Malalika Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kadewere in the district.
