Police in Blantyre have arrested 25 street children after a general out-cry from people over continued harassment perpetrated by street children who are commonly known as Masikini.

Those arrested include six girls and 19 boys whose ages range from nine to 20 years.

Spokesperson for Blantyre Police Station Augustus Nkhwazi confirmed of the arrest in a statement made available to faceofmalawi.

Nkhwazi said the children have the tendency of forcing people to give them money and at times they snatch valuables from unsuspecting people both in motor vehicles and pedestrians along the streets.

The children will appear in court on 5th March, 2019 to answer the charge of Gathering Arms contrary to the penal code.

Meanwhile, Police are appealing to the general public to report to police when they are harassed by street children for proper follow up and police interventions as they have observed that most Masikini victims do not report to police.
