Rumphi Police spokesperson Tupoliwe Kabwilo said the accident occurred after the driver failed to negotiate a sharp bend due to over speeding.
The two girls that sustained various degrees of injuries, have been admitted to Rumphi District Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The driver of the said vehicle, is in police custody awaiting court proceedings where he will answer a charge of causing death by reckless driving.
The deceased have been identified as 14-year-old Agnes Chaponga of Mavuka village and 6-year-old Chimango Munthali of Kamukwamba village both under Traditional Authority Jiravikuba in Mzimba district.
Kabwilo said the accident involved a motorcycle registration number KA 1262 driven by Lucky Nyasulu, 31, from Chikayamba village in Traditional Authority Mwankhunikira in Rumphi district.
She said investigations have revealed that the vehicle was coming from Rumphi direction going to Karonga.
“The vehicle missed the road and eventually hit four pedestrians who were walking in the opposite direction.
“Following the impact, two young female pedestrians died on the spot due to head injuries while the other two sustained minor injuries,” Kabwilo said.
