Opposition legislators in Malawi have told the government to introduce new policies that would bar the importation of agricultural products into Malawi.

This follows continued importation of Irish Potatoes, Cabbages, Pumpkins, Oranges, onion and Apples by some big retail shops in the country.

DPP legislator for Ntcheu North Assan Lipande believes the policy would protect local farmers from unfavorable competition.

Lipande said “the ban would also help farmers to find bigger markets within the country, therefore increase their profit margin.”

He further observed that the development can boost the foreign exchange generation base, as currently forex is also lost through the importation of products that are already locally produced.
