President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has expressed shock over the death of three people and destruction caused by hailstorm that hit Rumphi district on Saturday.

An assessment report released by signed by district disaster desk officer, Mr. Alufeyo Mhango says five are missing while nine are responding to medication following a hailstorm which affected Tchalo and surroundings.

The report further says that out of 20 affected houses, 10 have been completely damaged, such that people are in need of immediate assistance of food, shelter and blankets.

In a statement from the office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) signed by Mgeme Kalilani says the first couple is deeply shocked with the incident.

“The President and the First Lady extend their heart-felt sympathies to the families that have lost their loved ones in the disaster.

“They also pray for the families whose relations are missing,” reads in part the statement.

He added: “The President assures all those that have been affected that Government will provide them all the support they need to resume their normal lives.”

The President has since directed the Departments of Disaster Management Affairs to ensure that all affected are assisted accordingly and with speed.
