Vendors in Kasungu have asked District Council to buy a fire fighting engine.

The call follows the fire incident that razed down Chipiku stores in Kasungu on Monday destroying properties worthy mk450 million.

Chairman of vendors in the district Bannes Sanudi said failure by the municipality to provide extinguishing equipment to the Chipiku stores fire is an indication that business places are not safe.

Sanudi added that vendors will be meeting and agree on how they should pressurize the council to meet their demand.

“The municipality needs to have a running fire-fighting engine all the time. We as vendors will be meeting to see how to put pressure to the council to have a running fire engine,” Bannes said.

Commenting on the matter Kasungu municipality chief executive officer Grace Chirwa said the municipality has a fire-fight engine but it is not working as it was vandalized by protesting students.

She added that for the fire-fighting engine to be back in use it will cost a lot.

“The current fire-fighting engine needs a lot of money for maintenance, which unfortunately we do not have at the moment,” Chirwa said.

To buy and ship a new fire-fighting engine it will costs over K500 million. ftaeT
