United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima has promised to introduce duty-free week in which business players who have Malawi Revenue Authority tax certificates would be able to import merchandise without paying duty during such particular windows.

Chilima made the remarks during his last campaign rally in the Southern Region at Njamba Freedom Park in the commercial capital Blantyre on Tuesday ahead of the forthcoming May 21 tripartite election.

In his speech Chilima highlighted a number of development projects lined up once voted into power and one of it being reducing import duty on expensive vehicles such as Range Rovers, VX, Fortuners and others.

He said the move will cub tax evasion among business players in the country.

Chilima also pledged to remove Value Added Tax on airtime, water and electricity in addition to removing connection line fees for water and electricity supply.

The announcement attracted ululation and chanting among Malawians who invaded Njamba Freedom Park in the commercial capital.

Turning to corruption, Chilima exposed the corruption happening at Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC), saying bag of cement is being bought at 100 US Dollars which is about Seventy Five Thousand Kwacha (K75,000).

He said once voted into power the one behind the deal will face the law.
