Malawi Parliament has dismissed rumours that a statue planted in parliament premises belonging to the late Professor Bingu wa Mutharika has been demolished during the yesterday’s demonstrations organized by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), United Transformation Movement (UTM) and the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
Yesterday in the afternoon hours, there were reports circulating on social media indicating that angry protesters who stormed the parliament premises have demolished the late Bingu’s statue.
But in the public notice dated 20th June 2019, the office of clerk of parliament has dismissed the story saying it’s fake.
“The truth of the matter is that the statue is intact. The general public is hereby advised to ignore the story as it is fake,” says the notice signed by L. Mengezi.
Meanwhile, the office has said it will issue a statement on what happened yesterday at the parliament building in relation to the demonstrations.
