Police have arrested nine more people in connection with the looting of shops and destruction of property in Mzuzu during the June 20th demonstrations.

On June 20 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the banner Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) organized nationwide demonstrations aimed at forcing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansa to resign.

During the protest, some unruly protestors forget the course of the demonstrations and engaged themselves in uncalled conduct by vandalizing public and private resources.

The nine brings the number of arrested suspects to 11.

Meanwhile, the CSOs have organized another vigils starting on July 5 and 4 with the same purpose of forcing Ansah and all MEC commissioners to step down.
