First Discount House (FDH) Bank has withdrawn a court injunction it issued against Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) restraining the organization from releasing a report citing the bank’s involvement in politics.

In a statement seen by a Faceofmalawi reporter, reasons for the withdrawal of the court injunction by FDH follows after a ‘frank and cordial discussion with HRDC leadership.’

The statement further continued that the bank never meant to stop HRDC from organizing demonstrations on governance issues in the country.
Adding to that the statement said that FDH will remain committed in serving for the interest of Malawians.

“We therefore wish to advise the public that FDH Bank remains committed to serving Malawians professionally adhering to rules set by the regulatory financial institutions in the country, Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM),” reads part of the statement.

Reacting to the development, vice chairperson of HRDC Gift Trapence commended FDH for lifting the injunction.

Trapence further added that HRDC was surprised with the injunction by the bank.

“What they have done is very commended because we were surprised with the injunction in the first place. We would like to urge people on the lookout of false information which may end up tarnishing the image of innocent people and organizations,” he said.

FDH obtained an injunction last week which stopped HRDC from making public report among others alleged that the bank fuelled in rigging of May 21 tripartite elections.
