Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has asked the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to go ahead and take legal action against the party’s statement regarding electoral officers who are collecting information in some districts.

On July 13, 2019, MCP called upon Malawians to be vigilant towards and apprehend MEC lawyers and staff that have been going around collecting signatures of presiding officers ahead of Presidential case scheduled to commence on July 29.

The statement led to the attack of MEC lawyers led by Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale on Sunday in Kasungu.

The development forced MEC to issue a statement asking MCP to withdraw the statement or face legal action on the matter.

But MCP Spokesperson Reverend Maurice Munthali said the party stands by its words in the letter, saying the party is ready to face MEC in court should the matter be taken to court.

“MEC knows that they have messed up and there is no way they can ask MCP to withdraw that statement because we are talking on behalf of Malawians and we are representing their anger. That is why we asked them to be vigilant,” he said.

Meanwhile HRDC has backed the stand taken by MCP.
