Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Chitipa South Wellan Chilenga has asked parliament not to approve MK24 billion funding to the state owned Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) for the maize purchase, saying the state producer is incompetent.
Chilenga, Chairperson of the joint Parliamentary committee on Agriculture, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change said this in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
“Ministry of Agriculture told us that there are 492 ghost workers at ADMARC and ADMARC official told us that 7, 000 metric tonnes of maize rot in ADMARC deports because of carelessness, making the government to lose money amounting to MK1 billion,” said Chilenga.
He said the proposed MK24 billion should be channeled to National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) and not to ADMARC which is incompetent.
Turning to Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), Chilenga said the statutory body should be re-organised, saying the body is full of corrupt people.
He said most of the top officials working at ESCOM are incompetent aswell making the company to have huge debt.
