Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) Vice Chairperson Gift Trapence has condemned Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) youth cadets for disrupting anti-Jane Ansah demonstrations on Wednesday in the commercial capital Blantyre.
On Wednesday, HRDC organized demonstrations with an aim of forcing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah to resign for failing to manage the May 21 tripartite election.
The demonstrations started on very well from Kumuzu Upper Stadium but upon reaching Chichiri Trade Fair Grounds protesters bumped into DPP supporters who blocked the Chipembere High Way.
The two sides started pelting stones at each other but DPP cadets overpowered the protesters and pounced on Billy Mayaya.
The police intervened by firing teargas at the protesters who were unarmed resulting to the death a 5 year old child at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
As this was not enough, a pregnant woman collapsed due to the teargas. The development forced HRDC to call off the demonstrations.
Writing on his official facebook page, Trapence expressed shock over DPP cadets and police action during the demonstrations.
“With what happened yesterday in Blantyre. We are now vindicated that the Malawi Police service is a DPP wing. Now wonder they jointly collaborated with CADETs to attack peaceful and Lawful demonstrators. But they must know that they have attacked the tenancy of democracy and they have attacked their own fellow citizens which is declaring a war to fellow citizens.
“This savagery must stop and they will be held accountable. No one in a democracy is a above the Law. History will judge you bitterly. No one and I mean no one including APM will intimidate HRDC and Malawians. Very soon you will held accountable,” wrote Trapence.
Meanwhile the Malawi Police Service is yet to comment on the matter.
