The anti-quota system demonstrations in Rumphi district have turned ugly as police & protesters have engaged in running battles.
Protesters have destroyed police & teachers’ houses. Ugly scenes started after police arrested one of the protesters who was pelting stones at a shop.
The protesters demanded that the police set free the arrested protester. They later started attacking police who later fired teargas. Both the police & organisers of the demos have confirmed this.
According to the coordinator for the Mzuzu anti-quota protests, Kelvin Sato who is on the ground in Rumphi, the protesters have destroyed shops, teachers’ houses & police houses.
