Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon suspended Parliament after opposition MPs rejected government back-door move to confirm Duncan Mwapasa as Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service.
Leader of the House Kondwani Nakhumwa who is also Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development moved a motion in the house for supplementary order paper, asking the house to confirm Mwapasa as Police IG and Joseph Nangantani as Auditor General.
The move caused commotion in the house with opposition MPs vehemently protesting the confirmation of the motion. The move forced Deputy Speaker Madalitso Kazombo to suspend the proceeding prematurely.
Speaking in an interview with the press after the suspension of the house, Richard Chimwendo Banda accused Nankhumwa flouting procedures.
On his part, Nankhumwa said all prodcures were followed on the matter.
Meanwhile Parliament will resume debate today.
