Information reaching Faceofmalawi indicates that donors have suspended purchase of blood for country’s central hospitals, forcing Malawi government to source own funds.

This has been disclosed in MEMO from Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Population Dan Namalika addressed to Directors of all Central hospitals in the country dated October 1, 2019 seen by Faceofmalawi reporter.

According to Namilika, the development means all funds for blood purchase will now be provided by the government.

“As you are aware, there has been ongoing discussions with the HJSF donors regarding the support they have been providing towards the purchase of blood and blood products from Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS). I wish to formally inform you the donors have decided to stop financing the purchase of the blood and blood products for central hospitals.

“I therefore request that from the current Financial year and on wards, these payment be made from the Government provisions,” reads in part the statement.
