Four people have been charged with the murder of a police officer at Msundwe in Lilongwe.

The suspects appeared before the Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court on Friday to be formally charged.

The suspects have applied for bail but magistrate Violet Chipao has reserved her ruling to next Monday.

Meanwhile, one of the suspects, who is 17 years old did not appear before court because he is a minor and he will be prosecuted in a juvenile court.

Few weeks ago locals in Msundwe were in running battles with police as were not happy with President Peter Mutharika’s idea to hold  a rally in the district as the claim not to recognize him saying he got his victory under the help of correctional fluid Tipp-Ex.

As the situation got worse, locals started attacking police officers leading to the death of Superintendent Usumani Imedi who was stoned by the angry mob.
