The family of Justin Phiri a protestor who died in Police custody after sustaining injuries from assault has demanded MK150 million as compensation.

Late Phiri was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital after spending days in Police custody nursing injuries of assault by Malawi Defense Forces (MDF), according to videos captured by citizen journalists.

Lawyer for the deceased family Blacious Kondowe has said “the family has given government three months to meet the demands or else we’ll be forced to proceed with a legal action”.

Phiri, according to video clips posted on social media was brutalized by MDF soldiers who were manning anti-Jane Ansah demonstrations.

Meanwhile, results of an independent post-mortem revealed Phiri died to severe infections following failing to receive medical treatment after heavy assaults with multiple objects.
