Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu has expressed shock at the death of his wife Maria Inglis in a car accident on Saturday at Chitale near Phalula Trading Centre in Balaka.

Nyamilandu’s wife died on the spot with her friend Effie Kadzakumanja when the car the Fam boss was driving overturned several times as he attempted to avoid hitting an on-coming truck.

Speaking in pain yesterday he said they were planning for a wedding next month.

“It’s a tragic loss. She was the love of my life, my soul of my heart. It’s difficult to comprehend such a situation,” he said.

“It happened at a time we were planning to get married next month.”

He also dismissed allegations that he was trying to avoid a head on-collision as he was trying to overtake a car.

“I was trying to avoid a truck which had taken three quarters of our lane. I overturned several times in split seconds and found myself trying to rescue my wife and her friend,” he said.

The Fam boss disclosed that he did not understand how he survived.

“I don’t know how I survived. It’s just shoulder chest pains.”

He was treated at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital.

His son, who was among six people traveling in the car, is still admitted at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre.

The body of late Maria Inglis will be laid to rest tomorrow in Mulanje.
