In Meerut district,India – A man allegedly battered his wife with a brick and then set her on fire after pouring petrol on her in a forest in Bhawanpur. After spotting the woman engulfed in flames, the passers-by rushed to rescue her.

The police, after receiving the information, arrived at the spot and rushed the woman to a nearby hospital for treatment. The survivor has sustained nearly 70 per cent burn injuries and she is currently battling for her life at the hospital.

The accused, identified as Mustakeem, is labourer at a mill and wanted to kill his wife named Masrufa. Somehow, he persuaded her to come to Shamli and then took her to a forest in Bhawanpur’s Jhai village. Both got engaged in a heated argument and then, in a fit of rage, Mustakeem stabbed her brutally with a brick.

Then the accused gathered residue of sugarcane plants from the surrounding and set the woman on fire after pouring petrol on her. According to the Amar Ujala, the woman after being set on fire ran for about 200 metres to escape the brutality before falling unconscious. The video of the deplorable incident has gone viral on social media.

Bhawanpur station in-charge Sanjay Kumar said that the woman is in a very critical condition. The preliminary investigation suggests the possibility of marital dispute behind the attempt to kill the woman. However, the investigating officials are also probing other possible causes of the contention between the couple.
