Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) leaders will appear in court this afternoon for formal charges, Faceofmalawi can reveal.

On Sunday, the Malawi Police Service arrested HRDC Vice Chairperson Gift Trapence and Macdonold Sembereka on grounds of inciting violence.

Timothy Mtambo handed himself to area 3 police unit on Tuesday.

This morning the police recorded a statement from HRDC chairperson Timothy Mtambo at area 3 police station in Lilongwe.

Lawyer for Mtambo, Khwima Mchizi confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

According to Mchizi, Mtambo, his deputy Gift Trapence and another HRDC executive member McDonald Sembereka might appear in court at 2pm today.

Meanwhile, there is tension at the Lilongwe High Court where sympathisers have been expecting Mtambo and his counterparts to appear to be formally charged.
